Hello Friends of Brothers 4 Literacy & Life,

We hope that this correspondence finds you doing well. Since our last update, Brothers 4 Literacy received two exciting recognitions this year. We were honored to receive the 2017 Georgia Youth Leadership Award from 21st Century Leaders, in February, for being one of Georgia’s top 20 outstanding youth leaders and the YOU International Award, In March, from YOU International for our outstanding work in community service. These achievements are wonderful and we were truly grateful to receive them, but it’s time to get back to it.  Real people need real help and there is nothing to do but the work!!

Brothers 4 Literacy & Life will be embarking on our next mission trip in just a few short weeks to help two small poverty stricken schools and a boys group home located in Tanzania and Kenya. Both of these schools and the group home entered our lives through chance encounters and hold a special place in our hearts. We want nothing more than to be able to help them and you will understand more as you read further.

A few years ago, our family had the opportunity to meet and help host a student from Tanzania, named Makenge. One day, Makenge was on his way to a friend’s birthday party when a hyena brutally attacked him. He lost both of his arms and sustained severe head trauma. After laying in a Tanzanian hospital for days nearing death, two Catholic Nuns helped Makenge get to the United States so that he could receive medical treatment. This treatment would come from a nonprofit organization that provides life changing medical care from some of the best doctors in the U.S. While Makenge was in Atlanta undergoing treatment with his prosthetist, Dr. Dan, our family got to spend some very valuable time with him. Makenge explained to us how he was so eager to return to his school, St. Catherine Laboure in Masanga, Tanzania, to finish his education which was halted after his accident. St. Catherine-Laboure is an underserved school that has over 300 students. They are in need of books for their library and other supplies that will help them support their students. We’d love to help them.

The second school that we will be visiting is The Chaka School in Nyeri, Kenya. The Chaka School has over 700 students. We learned of The Chaka School when a few classmates of ours hosted a fun run in 2014 that benefited the school. We’ve kept up with the school with updates from the principal and several of our exchange students who attend a nearby school. The Chaka School is poverty stricken and it’s students need to have uniforms to be able to attend class. Some potential students are precluded from going to school because they cannot afford uniforms. The cost of each uniform is $8. Our main goals are to be able to work with the students, help increase the school’s literacy rates by providing books and to help provide uniforms for the students.

Finally, we will be visiting The Comet House in Kikuyu, Kenya. The Comet House is a boarding home for boys that come from extremely poor families. They are smart and talented boys with high academic potential. They’ve been provided a support system to help them achieve great success in life. The boys are housed together and attend a private school close to The Comet House and are only expected to study. They essentially become brothers, so how could Brothers 4 Literacy not help them. The Comet House has one mission, to provide these young men with an educational hand up by placing them in a nurturing environment and providing them with the resources needed to be successful. Their hope is to help the boys break the cycle of generational poverty due to lack of education so that they will be able to provide for their families when they come of age. The 9 current residents of The Comet House have all risen into the top 10% of their classes. It only took one person, Mr. Fred, to believe in them and to spark their interest in becoming lifelong learners. Brothers 4 Literacy wants to help be big brothers to guys of The Comet House and someone that they can look up to as well. We would like to provide books for their library and other learning tools. The cost to educate one student for one school year is $350.

St. Catherine Laboure, The Chaka School and The Comet House all have their own unique needs. We will be providing them with books, uniforms, school supplies, an underground water tank to catch rain water and computers.  In order to do this, Brothers 4 Literacy & Life needs you!

Please help us achieve our goal of supporting these 3 underserved schools. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Brothers 4 Literacy is a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt organization. Please visit our website, http://www.brothers4literacy.org/donate.html to donate securely online and find out more about our organization. Thank you very much in advance for your donation. Please pass this along so that we will get one step close to achieving our goal in just a few short weeks. A donation of any size would be greatly appreciated. In addition, thank you for all of your prayers and support. This means a lot to us and we cannot wait to help impact the lives of so many. We are and will continue to be two brothers that are trying to change the world one kind gesture at a time.

Have a blessed day.

Sincerely,

Edward and Xavier Holliday,
